In filipino, halo halo (prounced hollow hollow) means mix mix. It’s also the name of my favorite dessert. As I mentioned, halo halo is a Filipino dessert and a mashup of all the goodness and I grew up loving as a kid. It has many variation but the essence is shaved ice, evaporated milk, and sugar. Throw in some flan (lecheflan), bean paste, red beans, fried dried rice flakes (pinipig) or rice crispies if you don’t have pinipig, ube (type of purple yam) ice cream and you have the makings of an explosion of wonder in your mouth. No joke. This newsletters namesake is to try to follow the spirit of halo halo because I would share ideas and concepts and pretty much random thoughts as “food for thought”.
Luckily and proudly, I am Filipino. A mixture of Spanish and Chinese and I look hybrid. People mix me up for being Mexican my former boss used to mix me up for looking like my friend Rey who is Mexican. My last name is Ebreo which is a Greek word for Hebrew. My native tongue Tagalog the mostly used language in the Philippines sounds Malaysian.
So yeah I am a walking talking confluence if factors. It gets weirder (more wonderful). My childhood friend was African American . My childhood crush was Puerto Rican. My boss was Mexican. My mentors at work are Jewish American. My high school best friend was Irish. My friend who got me first serious job was German Polish, but had been a 3rd generation American. I graduated 3rd in my highscool class. Tied for first was and American (who I hung out with at his home), an Indian who I made a video with, and 2nd places was a Greek whose home I also visited. My roommates in college were Filipino, American, and Mexican brothers from another mother.
So yeah. I can relate to anybody and everybody. If my mom collected shoes I collect people and tend to my garden of lively budding friendships. Even hurtful relations I can’t let go of. I hate having to let go of a relationship.
Recently, my therapists who are predominantly female say I am funny, generous and authentic. I was commencement speaker and in college and I’ve gotten better writing, practicing and delivery of my speeches. Plenty of room for improvement- I know that. So I think I know what I’m taking about when I say actions speak louder than words. Yes words sting and can shut down conversations and shatter relationships. I don’t want to permanently and irreparably break relations.
